Opponent- Voted against protecting girls’ sports (HJ 534)

Hattaway- I believe girls’ sports and private spaces should be reserved for biological females. 

Opponent- Voted against reigning in Gov. Walz emergency powers (HJ 483)

Hattaway- I believe emergency powers should be limited, clearly defined, and subject to legislative oversight so no administration can govern indefinitely without accountability.

Opponent- Voted to continue massive government growth/against returning large surpluses back to taxpayers (HJ 829)

Hattaway- During a time of historic surpluses, I support responsible budgeting and returning excess tax dollars to the people who earned them. Not growing government beyond what families can afford.

Opponent- Voted against an independent Inspector General to take the work of investigating fraud away from Walz and Ellison (HJ 643

Hattaway- Minnesota needs an independent Inspector General with the authority to investigate waste, fraud, and abuse.

Opponent- Voted to continue giving illegal immigrants free health care. (HJ 14, 6/9/25)

Hattaway- I support prioritizing taxpayer‑funded benefits for citizens and legal residents, including health care and higher‑education programs.

Opponent- Voted against informing ICE of illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes (HJ 2643)

Hattaway- When violent crimes occur, state and federal agencies should work together. Public safety depends on communication, not barriers.

Opponent- Voted to require people to retreat instead of being able to protect themselves when threatened (HJ 585)

Hattaway- Minnesotans should not be forced to retreat when threatened. I support the right of law‑abiding people to defend themselves and their families.

Opponent- Voted to continue wasting money on light rail (HJ 407)

Hattaway- I support transportation investments that deliver measurable value to taxpayers, not projects that repeatedly exceed budgets and fail to meet ridership expectations.

Opponent- Voted against forcing doctors to provide life-saving medical care to babies born after a failed abortion (HJ 744, 3/13/2025)

Hattaway- Every newborn deserves medical care, regardless of the circumstances of their birth, a reflection of our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable. Valuing life means protecting every child who enters the world, and every life has inherent dignity and worth.

Opponent- Voted against giving women the freedom to choose who they can seek pregnancy advice from (HJ 751, 3/13/2025)

Hattaway- Women should have the freedom to seek advice, support, and care from the provider of their choice. Not only those approved by the state.

Opponent- Voted against providing UI relief to miners on the Iron Range who were laid off in the recent mine closures. (HJ 3916, HJ 3970, and HJ 4198, 5/18/2025)

Hattaway- When industries face closures or layoffs, especially on the Iron Range, workers deserve timely unemployment relief and support to keep families afloat.

Opponent- Voted against income tax cuts that would have given back up to $1,000 per year in ongoing tax relief to all Minnesota families. (HJ 7172-7172, 4/27/2023)

Hattaway- I support permanent income tax cuts that let families keep more of what they earn. I believe meaningful, ongoing tax relief is one of the most direct ways we can make Minnesota more affordable for everyone.

Opponent- Voted against exempting veteran-owned property (VFW’s, American Legions, etc.) from property taxes (HJ 15624-15631, 5/3/2024)

Hattaway- I support exempting veteran‑owned organizations like VFWs and American Legions from property taxes because these posts serve our communities, honor those who served, and should never be taxed out of existence.

Opponent- Voted to increase state government spending by 41% over base (HF5454, 4/18/2023) … $22 billion

Hattaway- I believe government should live within its means. A forty one percent increase in state spending is unsustainable, and I would focus on responsible budgeting that protects taxpayers, reins in waste, and keeps Minnesota affordable for working families.

Opponent- Voted against directing the Attorney General’s office to investigate waste, fraud, and abuse in government (HJ 694, 2/6/2023)

Hattaway- I believe taxpayers deserve full transparency and accountability. I support directing the Attorney General to investigate waste, fraud, and abuse in government, because we deserve to know where our money is being used responsibly and not lost to mismanagement.

Opponent- Voted against an amendment which would have required a financial oversight report, conducted by a third party of the Department of Human Services to identify fraud at the department (HJ 15736,5/6/2024)

Hattaway- I support independent third‑party oversight of the Department of Human Services to identify waste, fraud, and mismanagement, because accountability is essential to restoring trust in state government.

Opponent- Voted to keep MinnesotaCare for illegal immigrants rather than repeal MinnesotaCare for illegal immigrants and use the funding for ambulance services instead (HJ 16203 &HJ 16204, 5/9/2024)

Hattaway- I believe state resources should prioritize essential services that protect every community. I support ending MinnesotaCare coverage for people who are not legally in the country and redirecting those dollars to strengthen ambulance services and emergency medical care across Minnesota.

Opponent- Voted against increased penalties on straw firearm buyers (HJ 11910,3/14/2024).

                    - Voted to water down the penalty on a straw firearm buyer (HF 17331, 5/17/2024)

Hattaway- We must take illegal firearm trafficking seriously. I support stronger penalties for straw buyers who purchase guns for people who cannot legally own them, because holding criminals accountable is essential to keeping our communities safe.

Opponent- Voted against a criminal penalty on a person in possession of a stolen firearm (HJ 15201,4/29/2024)

Hattaway- Anyone caught with a stolen firearm should face serious consequences. I support strong criminal penalties for possessing a stolen gun.

Opponent- Voted against increased penalties on straw firearm buyers when the gun is used to assault a first responder (HJ 15594, 5/02/2024).

Hattaway- I believe protecting our first responders must always be a priority. Anyone who buys a gun for someone who then uses it to assault a police officer, firefighter, or paramedic should also face consequences. Strengthening penalties for straw buyers is a commonsense step to keep our communities and our first responders safe.

Opponent- Voted to release violent offenders early from prison and erase their record, give tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to unaccountable nonprofits and violence interrupters instead of to law enforcement, and voted to grow government at an unsustainable rate

Hattaway- Public safety must come first. I support keeping violent offenders behind bars, not releasing them early or wiping their records clean. I would direct funding to law enforcement and proven public safety efforts, not unaccountable nonprofits, and I would insist on responsible budgeting that keeps government growth in check and protects taxpayers.

Opponent- Voted against directing the Attorney General’s office to investigate organized gang crime, drug crime, and retail theft (HJ 695, 2/6/2023)

Hattaway- I believe we need to take organized gang crime, drug trafficking, and retail theft seriously. I support directing the Attorney General to investigate these crimes because Minnesotans deserves a strong, coordinated response that keeps our communities safe and holds criminals accountable.

Opponent- Voted against holding murderers accountable to the full extent of the law (HJ 7092, 4/26/2023)

Hattaway- Murderers must be held fully accountable. I support enforcing the toughest penalties allowed by law for anyone who takes a life, protecting our communities and delivering justice for victims and their families is one of the most important responsibilities of government.

Opponent- Voted against increased sentences for repeat violent offenders (HJ 7093, 4/26/2023)

Hattaway- Repeat violent offenders should face tougher consequences, not lighter ones. Increasing sentences for individuals who continue to commit violent crimes means protecting our communities and making sure that the most dangerous offenders are not quickly returned to the streets.

Opponent- Voted against increased funding for hospitals. (HJ 7109, 4/26/2023)

Hattaway- Hospitals are essential to public safety, and funding should go where it truly strengthens care for patients and communities. I support increasing resources for hospitals that provide critical services, especially in emergency and rural settings, and I would insist on transparency and accountability to make sure every dollar improves care.

Opponent- Voted against amendment to increase nursing home funding by $132 million (HJ6798, 4/24/2023)

Hattaway- I believe we must take care of our seniors and the workers who serve them. I support increasing funding for nursing homes so they can hire and retain staff, provide quality care, and keep their doors open. Strengthening long term care is essential to public safety, dignity, and stability for families across Minnesota.

Opponent- Voted for an unaffordable, unreliable, dangerous energy policy that experts estimate will cost $313 billion by 2050, or $3,888 per electricity customer per year. (HJ 427,1/26/2023)

Hattaway- Minnesota needs an energy plan that is affordable, reliable, and safe. I oppose policies that drive up costs for families and small businesses, and I support a balanced approach that keeps the lights on, protects public safety, and prevents massive long term price increases for every electricity customer.

Opponent- Voted for making energy in Minnesota less affordable, less reliable and less safe, while increasing costs to taxpayers and ratepayers through an over-reliance on intermittent, unreliable, expensive sources of energy. (HJ 5353, 4/17/2023) (HJ 9321, 5/18/2023)

Hattaway- I support a balanced approach that protects taxpayers, keeps the grid stable, and ensures families and businesses can count on affordable energy every day.

Opponent- Voted to put more government between patients and their healthcare. (HJ 7159, April27, 2023)

Hattaway- I believe healthcare decisions should be made by patients and their doctors, not by more government bureaucracy. I support policies that reduce red tape, increase choice, and keep care affordable and accessible, rather than expanding government control over personal medical decisions.

Opponent- Voted against $100 million for school safety. (HJ 5424, April 20, 2023 - HF2497DE5 Amendment)

Hattaway- Every student deserves a safe learning environment, and I support investing in proven school safety measures. I would prioritize funding that directly protects students and staff, ensures accountability for how dollars are spent, and strengthens security without wasting taxpayer money.

Opponent- Voted against declaring an urgency to return SROs to schools. (HJ 11164, 2/12/2024) 

Hattaway- Getting school resource officers back into our schools should always be treated as an urgent priority. I support restoring SROs without delay so students and staff have trained professionals on site who can prevent violence, respond to emergencies, and keep our schools safe.

Opponent- Voted against the Science of Reading, empowering them to focus on the literacy crisis (HJ13282, 4/11/2024)

Hattaway- Every child deserves to learn to read, and Minnesota should use methods that are proven to work. I support the Science of Reading because it gives teachers the tools, they need to tackle the literacy crisis and helps more students succeed in the classroom.

Opponent- Voted against local control in student disciplinary policies. (HJ 13290, 4/11/2024)

Hattaway- Decisions about student discipline should be made by the people who know students best: parents, teachers, and local school leaders. I support restoring local control so schools can maintain safe, orderly classrooms and respond to issues quickly without one‑size‑fits‑all mandates from the state.

Opponent- Voted against a student’s right to read with a commitment to the Science of Reading and additional funding for literacy. (HJ 15311, 4/30/2024)

Hattaway- I believe every student deserves strong reading instruction, and that starts with approaches that are backed by real evidence. I support giving schools the resources and training needed to use the Science of Reading so more kids can build solid literacy skills and succeed in the classroom.

Opponent- Voted against assuring equal rights and freedom from discrimination for all. (HJ 16850, 5/17/2024)

Hattaway- I support clear, consistent protections that apply to everyone, uphold constitutional freedoms, and avoid government overreach while ensuring fairness for all. Everyone deserves equal treatment and freedom from discrimination.

Opponent- Voted against making protecting children a compelling state interest within the state constitution. (HJ 16851, 5/17/2024)

Hattaway- I believe protecting children should always be a top priority, and we can do that with strong laws and real accountability—not by adding broad, undefined language to the state constitution. I support clear, effective protection for kids that empower parents, strengthen safety, and avoid creating new constitutional mandates that could be misused or interpreted in ways never intended.

Opponent- Voted against protecting women’s shelters and facilities within the constitution. (HJ17957, 5/18/2024) 

Hattaway- Women’s shelters and single‑sex facilities must remain safe, private spaces for the women who rely on them. I support strong, clear protections that safeguard these facilities and the vulnerable women they serve, without vague constitutional language that could weaken those protections or create unintended consequences.

Opponent- Voted against allowing safeguards for gender-reassignment surgeries on children, and late-term abortions. (HJ 17958, 5/18/2024) 

Hattaway- Children deserve strong protection, and that includes firm safeguards around any medical procedures involving minors and clear limits on late‑term abortion. I support policies that put children’s safety first, uphold parental rights, and ensure Minnesota law reflects compassion, responsibility, and common‑sense protections for the most vulnerable.

Opponent- Voted against adding protections for religious liberty to the proposed ERA amendment. (HJ 17962, 5/18/2024) 

Hattaway- Religious liberty is a fundamental right that deserves strong, explicit protection. I support ensuring that any constitutional amendment, especially one as far reaching as the ERA, includes clear safeguards for people of faith so Minnesotans never have to choose between their beliefs and their rights.

Opponent- Voted to allow individuals who have been in prison the last 10 years or will in prison the next 10 years to be included in redistricting where they do not live (HJ13087,4/08/2024) 

Hattaway- Redistricting should reflect where people live, not where they are incarcerated. I support fair maps that represent real communities and ensure every district is drawn based on residents who are part of that community, not temporary populations counted somewhere they do not call home.

Opponent- Voted against changes that would make our election more secure, but instead would only adopt an election day holiday (HJ13085, 4/08/2024) 

Hattaway- Minnesotans deserve real election security, not symbolic changes. I support strengthening voter ID, tightening verification processes, and improving transparency.

Opponent- Voted for elections policy omnibus allowing individuals to vote based on their described location rather than an official address (HJ13107, 4/08/2024) 

Hattaway- Voting should be tied to a person’s real, verifiable residence, not a self‑described location. I support common sense rules that require an official address, so our elections remain secure, transparent, and grounded in the actual communities’ people live in.
